Common TMJ Symptoms and What You Can Do About It

TMJ

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ), located on either side of the head in front of your ears, helps connect your jawbone to your skull. TMJ helps you chew, swallow and speak with a combination of muscles and ligaments. You can experience pain in the jaw joint due to multiple issues, such as genetics, arthritis or jaw injury. Both nonsurgical and surgical treatments can help with the discomfort and pain associated with TMJ disorders. If you are looking for effective TMJ treatment in Mississauga, get in touch with GD Orthodontics. Common Symptoms of TMJ disorders

TMJ could be temporary or last for many years. It is common among people between the ages of 20 and 40 years and is known to affect women more than men. Here are some symptoms of TMJ disorders:

  • You might notice pain and discomfort in your face and jaw joint. The pain is known to radiate to the neck and shoulders

  • TMJ also causes an aching pain in and around your ear. You might also have a ringing sensation in the ears (tinnitus) or even hearing loss

  • There might also be a clicking or a popping sound when you open your mouth or chew. This symptom might be with or without pain

  • TMJ might also cause a lock in the jaw that makes it difficult for you to open or close your mouth. Your jaw might not open fully or might be locked in a wide-open position

  • Your face might swell leading to tiredness and pain

  • TMJ disorder can also lead to headache, dizziness and nausea

Home Remedies for TMJ Disorders

Often TMJ symptoms go away without treatment. If pain persists, you can relieve the symptoms by:

  1. Using a Warm Compress and an Ice Pack - Apply an ice pack to the affected area for a few minutes. Perform simple jaw exercises approved by your dentist. You can then apply a warm compress for another few minutes.

  2. Following a Diet - Eat a diet consisting of soft foods, such as cooked vegetables and fruits. Avoid large bites that require you to open your mouth wide. Additionally, skip hard or crunchy food, such as candy.

  3. Performing Relaxation Technique - Your dentist might suggest some relaxation techniques that help loosen your jaw. You can also try muscle relaxation and stress reduction techniques to relax your jaw bone.

  4. Using a Bite Guard - Your dentist might also suggest the use of a bite guard to keep you from clenching your teeth. They are usually made from plastic and prevent your upper and lower teeth from touching.
